Hanging Out on the D.L. Was Seductive… (but Maybe It’s Not Anymore)

For the last year or so, I have been nursing a knee situation. With this in play, I have not wanted to lower my lotus (pic, top right) down onto the backs of my arms as is traditional in my yoga practice.

I told myself this was OK.

In fact, I had a whole story around it.

This sounded like, “Aren’t I smart to take care of my knees?! Aren’t I responsible?!”

Yesterday, my teacher said, “OK, if you aren’t comfortable lowering down in lotus, try lowering your legs in a bent position.”

Without going into a lot of yoga blah-blah, this is far harder.

Internally, I thought, “Well aren’t you sweet?” Took a crack at it, came down like a scythe, and fell over on the floor like roadkill.

That said, he had inspired me.

It was exhilarating to have someone say, “Enough with hanging out on the D.L. There are other things you can do.”

Why am I going into all this with you today?

Because I think many of us have been in similar situations with our lives and businesses since March. We got put on the Disabled List and—to some degree—it’s been seductive to stay there.

We may even have been saying to ourselves, “Aren’t I smart/ responsible for staying in this holding pattern?!”

And very likely it was smart/responsible… at that time.

This morning, I took a crack at doing the pose again and—as seen in the picture on the lower right—it turned out it wasn’t pretty, but it was possible.

Which got me thinking—maybe I need to adopt this approach toward my business?

Because while things are no longer the same, that doesn’t mean I can’t arrive at my destination by another route. Particularly if I can find some friends/cohorts/mentors to challenge me.

I’m going to try, and I hope you will too.

It might not be pretty, but it may well be possible… and perhaps even exhilarating.
